Με κινηματογραφικό κύρος και μία δόση πολιτισμικού παλμού, οι New York Times έδωσαν στη δημοσιότητα τη λίστα με τις 100 καλύτερες ταινίες του 21ου αιώνα, μια κατάταξη που ήδη προκαλεί έντονες συζητήσεις στα social media και στα κινηματογραφικά πηγαδάκια ανά τον κόσμο.
Η επιλογή των ταινιών δεν ήταν τυχαία. Εδώ και εβδομάδες, οι συντάκτες της εφημερίδας προσκάλεσαν εκατοντάδες επαγγελματίες του κινηματογράφου – από σκηνοθέτες και σεναριογράφους μέχρι ηθοποιούς και κριτικούς – να μοιραστούν τις δικές τους κινηματογραφικές «σταθερές». Το αποτέλεσμα είναι μια αντιπροσωπευτική και πολυεπίπεδη χαρτογράφηση του σινεμά των τελευταίων 25 ετών.
Στην πρώτη θέση, φιγουράρει μια ταινία που, όπως σημειώνουν οι επιμελητές της λίστας, «αναδιαμόρφωσε τους όρους της κινηματογραφικής γλώσσας και άγγιξε παγκόσμιες συναισθηματικές χορδές». Η λίστα ισορροπεί ανάμεσα σε δημιουργίες μεγάλων auteur του ευρωπαϊκού και ασιατικού σινεμά, πρωτοποριακά indie διαμαντάκια και αμερικανικά blockbusters με καλλιτεχνική φλέβα.
Δεν λείπουν φυσικά τα έργα δημιουργών όπως ο Paul Thomas Anderson, ο Bong Joon-ho, η Céline Sciamma, ο Jordan Peele, μεταξύ άλλων, που ο καθένας με τον τρόπο του σημάδεψε το κινηματογραφικό τοπίο του 21ου αιώνα.
Οι πρώτες 20 θέσεις φιλοξενούν πολυβραβευμένα φιλμ, καθώς και cult αριστουργήματα που απέκτησαν διαχρονικό κοινό.
